Talking Doorsteps connects young poets and filmmakers from across the globe through a spoken word exchange that explores the idea of “home”.
Initiated by The Roundhouse in London, the project has helped develop new work by emerging and established international poets. Over several years, Talking Doorsteps has provided opportunities for writers to travel to different countries to work with and learn from local writers and youth organisations in South Africa, Bulgaria, Honduras, United Arab Emirates and Lebanon.
For Hull 2017, The Roundhouse, Wrecking Ball Press and the Bocas Lit Fest teamed up with the British Council and the BBC to take Talking Doorsteps to Trinidad and Hull. Through a series of workshops in Trinidad’s capital Port of Spain, and in the UK cities Hull and London, the next generation of spoken word artists from the Caribbean and the UK learned from one another and developed new work, which was performed at the BBC’s Contains Strong Language.
